dy on Attitudes and Opinions toward Psychiatry and Caretaking Burden of Family Members with Patients with a Psychiatric Disorder

Abstract
Objectives£ºThe aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes and opinions toward psychiatry and burden of caretaking family members who have a patient with psychiatric disorder. The results will be served as a basic data of ameliorating the burden of caregivers who influencing patients¡¯ relapse.

Methods£ºThe subjects of this study were 52 persons who have a patient with schizophrenia and 37 persons who have a patient with alcohol dependence. The total number of 89 caregivers completed the questionnaire and were analyzed. The Attitudes and Opinions toward Psychiatry and the Family Burden Scale were applied.

Results£º On attitudes and opinions toward psychiatry, in overall merits of the field of psychiatry factor, for sex, the male scored more positively, in efficacy factor, for education, the high school group scored more positively than other groups, in role definition and functioning of psychiatrists factor, for education, the high school group scored more positively than other groups, in possible abuses and social criticisms factor, for family, alcohol dependence family group had more positive attitude than schizophrenia family group.

Conclusions£º Chronic psychiatric disorders had an influence on patients¡¯ family members, especially negative effect, that it consequently affected the patients¡¯ treatment and relapse. The treatment strategy to relieve patient¡¯ s sufferings and to ameliorate the caretakers¡¯ burden must be offered.
